Pedro
Pedro Espi-Sanchis is an internationally acknowledged expert in the subject of African music in education. Born and raised in Spain and France, he moved to South Africa as a young professional musician in 1972. Not long after, he was introduced to traditional African music and thus began his life-long learning and teaching in this field.
He established the African music programs at the University of Cape Town and the Giyani College of Education, and has run extensive teacher training programs for education authorities across Southern Africa. In his workshops, Pedro introduces many African instrumental traditions, both as performance instruments in themselves and as vehicles for practically teaching the basics of music.
As much as Pedro is a teacher to his core, he is also a performer - a musician, composer, and story-teller. He is very well-known in South Africa as “Pedro the Music Man” from his long-running television series, has created music and songs for “School TV”, been featured on “Thakalani Sesame”, produced music and performed for plays in SA and in Europe. For over twenty years he has performed in schools, introducing young people to African music and to the idea that everyone can make music. He is regularly invited to perform at conferences, schools and festivals in Europe and the USA. Pedro also helps find work locally and internationally for traditional musicians from Southern Africa such as Madosini.
Pedro is the originator and director of the Vuvuzela Orchestra project and has created all the arrangements and compositions.
